Tips for athletes and supporters to stay warm

If you are an athlete waiting on the sidelines for your next move, or a supporter loyally standing on the side – staying warm is key to performing optimally and enjoying yourself. Athletes who are not moving for a while during substitutions, need to pay close attention to their bodies to prevent injuries and return to the field feeling refreshed. As for the loyal fans on the sidelines? Standing still in the cold is no easy feat. That is why we have a number of handy tips to keep both athletes and supporters nice and warm.

1. Dress smart: wear layers!

Layers are your best friend! Start with thermal clothing as a base layer to retain your body heat. On top of that, throw on a wind and waterproof jacket to protect you from the elements. And don't forget that umbrella – you can't always sit in a dry place!

2. Give your hands and feet some extra love

Your limbs are the first to catch the cold, so good gloves and thick socks are a must. A lot of heat escapes through your hands and feet, so make sure you keep them well wrapped up.

3. Make sure you have a warm and comfy seat

Whether you’re sitting on the sides or in the stands, make sure you have a heating pad, blanket or insulated seat cushion at hand. This will not only keep your body warm, but also ensures that the cold from the ground or bench doesn’t reach you. Pro tip: infrared heating pads and blankets are the new favourite! They keep your muscles and your body comfortably warm – ideal for athletes and supporters.

4. Keep moving

Even when you’re standing still, you can keep yourself warm by making small movements. A little walking back and forth, stretching or hopping can do wonders for your circulation and help to keep your body warm. A simple but effective trick!

5. Bring a hot drink

A thermos filled with hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate is not only delicious, but also warms you from the inside out. Perfect for braving the cold while cheering on your favourite team, or waiting to get into action.

Interesting facts about warmth and clothing

💡 Did you know that the ‘MFR value’ and the ‘water column’ are crucial terms when choosing clothing that keeps you warm? The MFR value (Moisture Vapor Resistance) indicates how well a fabric can keep away moisture. This is important because sweat that doesn’t evaporate can cool on your skin and make you colder. Thermal clothing with a high MFR value ensures that moisture can quickly escape from your body, so that you stay dry and warm.

💡 The ‘water column’ is a measure of how waterproof clothing is and is measured in millimetres. The higher the water column, the better the fabric protects you from rain. For example, a jacket with a water column of 10,000 mm is perfectly resistant to a heavy rain shower.

💡 Thermal clothing works by retaining your body heat and keeping moisture away from your skin. It often consists of multiple layers of fabric that trap air, which creates an insulating effect. This ensures that your body stays warm, even if you are standing still in the cold for a long time. The material is also breathable, so that moisture can evaporate from your skin and you stay dry. This combination of warmth and moisture regulation makes thermal clothing ideal for supporters who have to deal with cold and damp conditions.
